The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) will conduct a five-day training of trainers on earth observation and geospatial technologies for water resource management at its headquarters in Kathmandu, Nepal. The training is being organized as part of a series of capacity building initiatives for professionals from Kabul University in Afghanistan under ICIMOD’s SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) initiative, a joint development initiative of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). SERVIR works in partnership with leading regional organizations worldwide to help developing countries use information provided by earth observation data and geospatial technologies for managing water, weather and climate risks, agriculture and food security, and land use.

This training will focus on the use of earth observation data and geospatial technologies for water resource management in Afghanistan. Training materials and hands-on exercises have been specifically tailored for Afghanistan. The training will cover basic concepts of water resource management, theoretical and practical understanding of remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS). It will offer hands-on experiences to the participants in analyzing earth observation data for water resource management. Topics to be covered include advanced geospatial analysis including watershed and drainage delineations, generation of meteorological data, and hydrological modelling. There also will be a demonstration on the Kabul hydrological model, which will showcase how information derived from earth observation and geospatial technologies can be used for managing water resources.
