Since its inception in 2010, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), through its Mountain Environment Regional Information System (MENRIS) regional programme, has implemented the SERVIR-Himalaya initiative with support from USAID and NASA. The main objective of the SERVIR Himalaya initiative is to improve environmental decision making in the Hindu Kush-Himalaya (HKH) region through integration of earth observation information into geospatial tools and applications. The applications make use of most recent technologies and (near real time) satellite information from NASA’s satellite missions and other remote sensing products. In order to have better access and shorter processing time, ICIMOD has acquired its own MODIS receiving station that provides timely data for a number of applications. Within the framework of SERVIR-Himalaya, a number of science applications have been developed to promote access to high quality, user tailored tools and information services that are focused on thematic areas as agricultural monitoring, land cover and biomass, forest fire detection and disaster management, among others. Together with regional partners, we have collaborated in developing and refining these applications for optimal user engagement. A number of training programmes have been organized during the last years to further mainstream the use of SERVIR science applications and promote the use of geospatial technologies in the region. A regional training on SERVIR Science Applications with a special focus on MODIS products is being organized to bring together partners from the regional member countries and train them on different science applications that have been developed. During the training there will be a specific focus on MODIS products, data processing, and the way these products are integrated into our applications. Also, during the training there will be discussions on the best way forward to further mainstream and extend the use of SERVIR science applications in the future. Objectives Train the partners from national institutions in the regional member countries on use of SERVIR science applications and information products Receive feedback on the application and identify additional needs Explore opportunities for collaboration and extension of applications Further mainstream the use of SERVIR Science applications Train participants on the use of MODIS products Expected Outcomes The participants will acquire knowledge on SERVIR Science applications and the use of MODIS products, and explore avenues to further mainstream these technologies for improved environmental management in ICIMOD’s Regional Member Countries. Expected Participants The participants of the training course will be from ICIMOD regional member countries. This technical training is targeted to professionals in the field of GIS and Remote Sensing, Forestry, Agriculture, Disaster management or related areas. The participants should have knowledge of Remote Sensing and GIS. To assure gender equity, female participation will be highly encouraged.
