07 Feb 2024 Increasing forest fires have worsened the air quality across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. To help address this problem, we have added a Forest Fire Risk Outlook for Nepal to our forest fire monitoring system. The tool is based on the Canadian Fire Weather Index (FWI) System and uses the High-impact weather assessment Toolkit (HIWAT) data to generate FWI for Nepal. Daily inputs to the system consist of HIWAT noon time forecast for temperature (°C), relative humidity (%), wind speed (km/h), and rainfall (mm) over two days. The system is automatically updated every day. The information can be used to alert areas that face high risk for forest fires. Authors Mona Sharma Communications Officer
