ICIMOD will conduct a five-day training event on “Training of trainers on synthetic aperture radar and Google Earth Engine” in Pokhara, Nepal, from 15 to 19 July 2019. Through this training course, ICIMOD aims to strengthen the competencies of key academic partners in Nepal in the use of cloud computing technology, SAR data, and related applications.

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) will conduct a five-day training of trainers on Land Cover Mapping Using Earth Observation Data at its headquarters in Kathmandu, Nepal. The training is part of institutional capacity building activities for partner organizations in Afghanistan under ICIMOD’s SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) initiative.

Geospatial Information System (GIS) mapping supports landscape mapping, smart planning, and decision-making. But fewer women work in geospatial information technologies (GIT) in Nepal than in other regional member countries in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH). To improve the gender balance in the field, SERVIR-HKH promotes capacity-building activities in GIT for women.

In collaboration with NASA Applied Science Team (AST) and national partners, SERVIR-HKH is developing a drought monitoring and early warning system to support national- and local-level planning and agro advisory services. It has developed a prototype web based application that can visualize different drought indices and their spatial distribution along with a crop calendar.
